Warehousing: A Pure Necessity

I have always been fascinated with the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have developed and changed through history. Formally this is known as Etymology. Some words when looked at through this lens have a hauntingly beautiful development and source. Take the word “passion” for example. The root comes from the Latin pati which means to suffer greatly or endure. Later forms began to take on the meaning of a strong liking, enthusiasm, or love. So with a little artistic license one might say that the word passion means to suffer greatly for the thing which one loves. Other words are much more utilitarian in their history and origin. When you look at the word “warehouse” it was constructed more out of necessity than any other reason. Warehouse takes its currently used form from the Dutch warenhuis and/or the German warenhaus. The root comes from the Old English hus which can be defined as a shelter or dwelling; while the “ware” also comes from the Old English waru meaning an article of merchandise. When I look at the word warehouse it seems as though it was derived out of pure necessity. At its most basic level, warehouse can mean an institution to store goods.

110,000 Square Foot Expansion

At PacMoore, we chose to not take such a sterile meaning when it comes to the warehousing function. We strive to ensure that any products produced at PacMoore are not just warehoused here but rather cared for with a passion to do the job correctly however utilitarian in its nature. We take on the stewardship for our customers; which is a charge that is not assumed lightly. This can be seen in the recently expanded warehouse that I had the honor of acting as the Project Manager for. About 3 years ago we recognized the needs of our clients could be better served by expanding our warehousing operations. This ultimately took the form of a 110,000 sq. foot expansion. I am happy to say after much hard work and planning, the new building has greatly expanded our functionality on multiple fronts. The new warehouse provided an opportunity to double what was our previous number of fully functioning dock locations to 16. This has also afforded PacMoore the ability to direct shiploads for our customers. These are shipments that may have some special handling and loading requirements. We also have grown our capability to store and segregate different product types in a much more efficient manner.

Passion for Excellence

Warehousing, and ultimately shipping products, is a function that PacMoore takes seriously and demands a high level of execution. The warehouse team that I have the privilege to lead here at our Mooresville location strives to care for our clients with the utmost integrity. We know we are the last set of eyes and hands to deal with finished goods before they leave our facility. With that in mind, we want to sign our names with excellence, and the way we can do that is to ensure we are taking the best possible care of our customer’s products. It is truly something we have a passion for.
